Powder 101

HI guys! Welcome back! I figured since I wrote the “Mascara 101” and the “Foundation 101“, I would add to the series and had better write an ode to Powders! One of my favourite beauty products! As an oily skin gal, I have to use powders every day. If I don’t, my makeup will slip and slide all over the place; Not a very nice look. I am going to tell you all about my favourite powders; Pressed and Loose. If you are interested in hearing about the products that I like and would recommend, then let’s get to it, shall we?!

Let’s start by explaining the difference between pressed powder and loose powder (As if you don’t already know!):

Loose powder comes in a jar, has smaller particles (and therefore a finer consistency) and usually gives lightweight coverage.

Pressed powder comes in a compact and contains ingredients used to turn the product into a semi-solid.

With that being said, I feel that although these products are both powders, they are used in very different ways. Pressed powders travel much easier seeing as they are a solid; where loose powder would be all over your bag if it happened to open up at all. Also, I feel that loose powder is better for setting makeup, where pressed powder is better for blotting and touch-ups on the go! This is personally how I use these two types of powder; And I wouldn’t say I liked one type better. I love them both equally and feel they do their own job amazingly.

I am going to go over my favourite high end and drug store powders. To be honest, I find there are some drug store powders that are just as good, if not better, than some of the higher end powders. As long as they set my makeup, keep it from moving, and help to keep me matte for at least 20 minutes, it’s a winner in my book. Some are better than others, and those are the ones we are going to talk about now.

Let’s start with high end powders, because I am sure that most of you have heard of these through YouTube Beauty Gurus or other bloggers. Some of these are super popular but Hey! When they’re good, they’re good!

Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder – This one is an obvious one (That’s why I am starting with it). Everyone who is anyone LOVES this powder. I have heard about this powder from all of the YouTube Gurus that I follow so after the 1 millionth time, I decided to buy it. And it is worth the hype, for sure. This powder is very finely milled, which helps to create a soft-focus appearance and smoothes fine lines and imperfections. I really like how this powder feels on my skin. Like the description says, it is so finely milled, so it isn’t dusty or overbearing on the skin. It is light weight and really helps to set my makeup down. I also feel that it helps with the appearance of my pores and helps my imperfections look less abrupt. This powder is translucent so there is no extra colour added to your complexion. All in all this is a great powder, worth all the hype. It is rather expensive but you do get a whole lot of product and a little bit goes a long way (Even though I LOAD powder on to keep my face looking flawless).

Too Faced Prime and Poreless Loose Powder – In case anyone was unaware, I love me some Too Faced products! This was the very first high end powder that I purchased and I am SO glad that I did. I hadn’t really heard much about this product when I purchased it; I just happened to read the description on the Sephora website and liked what I was reading! This powder is amazing! Definitely one of my all time favourites. The description of this product says it minimizes pores, fine lines and imperfections for an airbrushed finish. HELL YEAH IT DOES! This powder is incredible. I really can’t say enough about it. It does make my face look flawless and airbrushed (Which is totally new for me seeing as I have a lot of discolouration and texture to my skin). This powder is probably one of the finest powders I have used, and the texture on your skin is just amazing. Again, it is translucent so there is no extra colour added, but it doesn’t give that sort of white, ghost look like some powders do. This has been sold out on TooFaced.com for way too long, and I can not wait until I can get this back in my life!

Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder – I received a sample of this product in one of my Ipsy bags and was super excited to try it. I had read a lot of good things about this powder; How it helps to mattify skin, remove excess surface oil and smooth imperfections. I have only used this product a few times but I did like it (With a few issues that we will discuss in a second). The powder is super fine, goes onto the skin really well and definitely does set my makeup in place. However, I don’t think that it helped to keep me matte any more than other powders. Also, the flash back in pictures is HORRIBLE. This is a translucent powder, but it is very chalky and in pictures, your face will look stark white! If you are going to be getting your photo taken, I would steer clear of this powder, but if you are just running errands, or going out for a night on the town, I think this powder is a great option.
…. Mind you, I would choose the previous two powders before this one 😉

Okay – Now onto drug store powders! Like I said, some of these I feel are just as good as some of the high end powders I have tried. The drug store is really steppin’ it’s game up.. And it’s exciting!

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder – This was one of my holy grails over the last couple of years before I became obsessed with high end makeup. My best friend, who NEVER wears makeup, fell in love with this powder as well! This powder is supposed to give 5 hours of shine control, and apply to the skin smoothly while reducing the appearance of pores and imperfections. For a drug store product, I feel this is great quality! There are different shades of this powder (I have only ever used the translucent one) depending on the type of coverage you would like. The translucent powder doesn’t add any colour, but it does help set makeup, makes pores less visible and makes the skin look beautiful. If you see this in the drug store, pick it up, for sure!

Fit Me Matte + Poreless Powder - Maybelline New YorkMaybelline Fit Me! Matte and Poreless Powder – This was all the rage on YouTube a few months ago when it first came out. When I read ‘Matte and Poreless’ I knew I needed to buy it. This powder was appealing to me because the description said that it mattifies and matches natural tone for a poreless-looking finish. I have only used this powder a few times as well (Because I bought the wrong shade and it makes me look orange) But I can see why people love it. The texture is amazing, glides on the skin so smoothly. It does help reduce the appearance of pores and helps hide my discolouration and texture. If I could go back in time, I would have purchased this powder in the Translucent shade instead of trying to match my skin tone. I feel like I would have liked the colourless powder better … Well, here’s to my next makeup purchase! 😉

And last but not least ELF High Definition Powder – This powder is said to be a dupe for the Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder. It gives a flawless, soft focus look to the skin by masking fine lines and imperfections, for a radiant complexion. I have only used this powder a few times, and I feel that I had the same reaction as the Tarte Amazonian Clay Powder. For everyday wear, going out for groceries or something, amazing. Really looks good on the skin and helps makes my imperfections less visible. In pictures, the flash back is stark white! But, I can get over this because the price is RIGHT! Also, ELF is a cruelty free brand, which is something that is very commendable. That is a huge thing right now, and I know a lot of makeup buyers are looking for this in the companies when they purchase products!

Alright guys – That’s it for my ode to powders! I hope you liked it and learned a little something that you didn’t know! What are your favourite powders? Any that you think I may like? I am constantly trying new powders so if you have any recommendations, I would love to hear them! If you try out any of these powders, let me know what you think!

    • I completely agree – I don’t have terribly bad dark circles, but I do have a lot of discolouration and redness on my face. Some powders definitely make the redness worse and make my skin look dull. I don’t find that any of the powders in my post do that (For me anyways!) 😉 Thanks for the love! xo

    • Definitely check them out! I just use a big fluffy brush to apply it all over my face – For under my eyes, I sometimes use my beauty blender to really pack it on and make sure that my concealer won’t crease! Thanks for the love! Xox
